By downloading, installing, or using the App, or by using this website, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the App. The App asks you to confirm that you understand these Terms and the Privacy Policy before you continue.

The Privacy Policy at https://www.dearuniverseapp.com/privacy-policy is part of how we describe data practices. These Terms are the rules of use.

1. What Dear Universe is

Dear Universe is a local-first personal journal for iPhone and Android phones (portrait). You write, add photos or video, record voice notes, and tag feelings on days in a calendar. Optional tools include a passcode lock, a daily reminder, on-device transcription of voice memos, and backup to your Google Drive.

The App is not a social network, not a shared diary, and not a medical or therapy service. Feelings tags are for your own reflection.

There is no Dear Universe account for your journal. Google Sign-In appears only if you use Drive backup.

2. Who may use it

You must be able to enter a binding agreement. The App is not directed at children under 13. Do not use it if you are under 13.

You are responsible for your device, your store account (Apple or Google), and any Google account you connect for backup.

3. Your content

You own the journal content you create. We do not claim ownership of your entries, media, or recordings.

You are responsible for that content and for keeping it lawful. Do not use the App to store or create content that is illegal.

Because the journal lives on your device (and optionally in your Drive), you are responsible for backups, for who can unlock the phone, and for who knows your lock code.

4. License to use the App

We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use Dear Universe on devices you own or control, as offered on the App Store and Google Play.

You may not reverse engineer, redistribute, or misuse the App except as allowed by law. Store kit, fonts, and third-party libraries remain owned by their licensors.

Apple and Google’s terms also apply when you download or buy through their stores.

5. Backup

Optional Google Drive backup copies journal data into a folder the App creates in your Drive. It is backup, not guaranteed real-time sync between phones.

We do not operate that Drive folder. Google may be unavailable. You might lose data if you uninstall without a backup, replace a device without restoring, fill Drive storage, revoke access, or if a backup or restore fails. You decide when to back up and whether automatic backup is on.

The lock code is not stored in the Drive backup.

6. Ads and “Buy me a coffee”

The App is free to journal in. After you have started writing (three entries), we may show ads (Google AdMob), subject to consent where required. Ads need a network connection.

A one-time in-app purchase, Buy me a coffee, removes ads forever on that Apple or Google account. It is not a subscription. Prices are set by the store and may vary by country. Refunds follow Apple or Google rules, not a separate Dear Universe payment page.

Purchases and restores require a network connection and a valid store account.

7. Transcription pack

Turning recordings into text is optional. It needs a one-time download of an on-device model (about 250 MB) from a third-party host. Recording works without it. We do not promise perfect transcripts.

8. Third-party services

The App and site may use Google (Drive, Sign-In, ads), Apple, Aptabase, Sentry, Hugging Face (model file), Expo (updates), and Vercel (website hosting, Analytics, Speed Insights). Their terms and availability are outside our control. Outages or policy changes on their side can affect backup, ads, purchases, updates, transcription download, or the website.

9. Updates

We may change the App, these Terms, or the website. Store updates and in-app updates may change behavior. Continued use after a change means you accept the new Terms. The URL for this page stays https://www.dearuniverseapp.com/terms-and-conditions so the in-app screen keeps working.

10. Disclaimer

The App is provided “as is.” We do not warrant that it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that data will never be lost. Journaling, feelings, and reminders are not professional advice.

11. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent allowed by law, we are not liable for lost journal data, lost profits, or indirect damages arising from use of the App, the website, Google Drive, ads, purchases, transcription, or third-party services. Some countries do not allow certain limitations; in those places our liability is limited to the maximum permitted.

Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited under applicable law.

12. Stopping use

You may stop using the App at any time (uninstall, disconnect Google, delete the Drive folder if you created one). We may stop offering the App or features. Store removal does not automatically delete copies on your device or Drive.
